USPS "package on hold" text (smishing)

A text message saying a parcel could not be delivered because of an incomplete address, with a link to "confirm" details or pay a small redelivery fee. The link opens a copy of the USPS tracking page that collects address and card details. USPS does not send unrequested tracking texts with links.

Right now what this family looks like

How to recognise it

  1. A text you did not ask for, with a link
  2. No tracking number you can look up on usps.com
  3. A tiny fee — the goal is your card, not the fee

What to do

  1. Do not tap the link, do not reply, delete it
  2. Expecting a parcel? Type usps.com yourself and use your real tracking number
  3. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and report it to USPIS
Already called, clicked or paid? what to do in the next hour
  1. Entered a password? Change it now, and everywhere else you used the same one
  2. Entered card details? Call your bank, ask them to block the card and reissue
  3. Entered a one-time code? Sign in to the real service now and check for changes to email, phone and payment settings
